EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge ruled that former Hartford teacher John Grande’s lawsuit can move forward after he was disciplined for remarks against his required DEI training—actions he says violated his First Amendment rights. Connecticut Post
- ➤ A recent audit showed that CT special education providers failed to complete required background checks, properly train staff for restraint and seclusion, and provide all services promised in student IEPs—putting student safety at risk. The state Department of Education is reviewing the audit’s 22 deficiencies—such as missing checks and inadequate training—and will decide on next steps. CT News Junkie

- ➤ Officials in West Hartford banned fishing at Spicebush Swamp until further notice after a possible bacterial contamination was discovered upstream — officials said park visitors remain safe as the investigation continues. WTNH News 8

- ➤ The University of Hartford hosted CT first responders for a three-day virtual reality training course in August, where police, firefighters, EMTs, dispatchers, and other emergency personnel practiced handling active shooter, hostage, and explosive scenarios. Participants used immersive 3D simulators—including a virtual helicopter setup—to improve real-time decision-making for future emergencies. University of Hartford

- ➤ COVID cases in Connecticut increased in August to levels not seen since February — and hospitalizations rose as well; state officials noted that reported numbers may not capture everyone due to varied testing.
