CRIME NEWS

  • Babar Khan, a 46-year-old from South Windsor, was sentenced in Bridgeport federal court yesterday to 18 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release for defrauding immigration clients out of more than $300,000 and must repay $371,743—his scheme exploited vulnerable individuals from 2015 to 2020.  FOX61
  • Two men were arrested Saturday in Hartford when one man struck two state police cruisers during a Burger King traffic stop on New Britain Avenue—state police tracked a brown 2025 Kia Telluride linked to counterfeit U.S. currency and later found the driver, a Hartford resident with a criminal record, carrying $6,500 in fake money, fentanyl pills and a handgun while his passenger faced forgery charges.  WTNH News 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two students from Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington became finalists in National Public Radio’s Student Podcast Challenge for their episode on the Russia-Ukraine War. The contest narrowed over 2,000 entries to 11 middle school finalists (showing strong national interest in student journalism).  Connecticut Post
  • Superintendents from across Connecticut gathered on Tuesday at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford for the annual back-to-school meeting. Governor Lamont, the education commissioner and other leaders attended a breakfast and speeches — discussing the theme of unlocking lifelong potential for the new school year.  WTNH News 8
  • UConn opened its first student housing in Downtown Hartford on Tuesday at 525 Main St (housing 55 students) and marked a major step in linking campus life with city opportunities. The new apartment-style facility offers fully furnished kitchens and private bathrooms, and a larger residence on Pratt Street will open next fall for about 200 students.  FOX61

  • Sen. Richard Blumenthal reintroduced the Better CARE for Animals Act in Newington after a May report showed a 37% rise in animal abuse from 2023 to 2025. The act will let federal authorities impose criminal penalties—aimed at stopping mistreatment and boosting enforcement.  CT News Junkie
