  • A motorcyclist died after a crash with an SUV along Albany Avenue in Hartford early Sunday morning—officers responded at 3:19 a.m., transporting the injured driver to a nearby hospital while the investigation continues.  WFSB-TV
  • A single-family home on Thomas Street suffered significant fire, smoke, and water damage on Sunday afternoon as West Hartford firefighters tamed the blaze at 3:52 p.m.—officials said the home is now uninhabitable and the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.  We-Ha

  • Max Zeller Furs is leaving its longtime spot at 976 Farmington Ave to move across the street to 977 Farmington Ave in West Hartford Center. The family-owned business plans to reopen by Oct. 1 with a larger space—growing from 1,300 to roughly 2,000 square feet.  We-Ha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont signed Public Act 25-43 at the State Capitol in Hartford on Thursday—aiming to curb gun violence by holding gun manufacturers, distributors and retailers accountable. The law will take effect Oct. 1—allowing civil lawsuits against those that fail to enforce safe sales practices.  FOX61
  • CT Conference of Municipalities director Brian O’Connor said towns favor a regional approach using Councils of Governments—rather than the strict allocation model in House Bill 5002 that was passed and then vetoed—and he noted that future revisions could include parking assessments and state support like housing vouchers and tax credit increases to meet the need for 90,000 housing units.  NBC Connecticut
  • Connecticut’s state Treasury sent over 15,000 checks between May and July using the CT Big Match program to return unclaimed money from banks, insurance companies and other sources. A letter that comes with each check warns it is not a fraud and explains that larger claims will be reviewed manually — the program automatically funds sole owners with amounts under $2,500.  Connecticut Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Samples of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus have been collected in 21 towns with 48 infections recorded as of Monday, reported by the state researchers—no human cases have been reported. Health officials urged residents to use repellent and limit their outdoor time at dawn or dusk as mosquito activity is expected to rise through September.  FOX61

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn running back Mel Brown, a senior from Georgia, averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season and showed strength in both rushing and pass protection—NFL scouts noticed his potential. Coach Jim Mora said the Huskies will rely on Brown’s versatility as they host Central Connecticut on Aug. 30 at 2 p.m.—expecting him to grow even more this season.  Connecticut Post
