  • A house fire left the Martinez family in Suffield homeless as their home was lost in a blaze; Skyline Restaurant in Windsor Locks is helping by giving meals & organizing donations while offering a job to a family member.  FOX61

  • Twin Peaks will open three new lodges in Connecticut as its first New England locations. New London Hospitality will develop the sites to serve sports fans with its made-from-scratch menu and signature 29-degree beers — with potential markets including Hartford.  Connecticut Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, UHart’s Hartattack a cappella group led a candlelit carol sing on the Hartford Times building portico — a revived tradition that united residents in song and remembrance. UHart President Lawrence P. Ward and Mayor Arulampulam shared hopeful messages emphasizing community spirit during the holiday event.  University of Hartford
  • The Wadsworth Atheneum is hosting Sofía Gallisá Muriente’s experimental film Un monton de silencios that examines the legacy of Víctor Gerena and his mother Gloria through interviews and archival footage. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut DEEP hosted four listening sessions in Burlington, Derby, Sharon, and West Hartford to hear views on living with bears amid rising conflicts; at the West Hartford meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Elmwood Community Center, residents stressed public education — some supported a regulated hunt.  Connecticut Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Lamont announced this week that nearly 40,000 residents will soon receive letters to forgive all or part of their medical debt in the program’s third round, which has already erased $198 million since December through a partnership with Undue Medical Debt.  FOX61
  • Metro-North will change ticket policies on Sunday, Jan. 4 by adding an $8 mobile surcharge and replacing round-trip tickets with an unlimited Day Pass valid until 4 a.m. the next day — the MTA approved these changes in September to streamline fare collection and alert riders via the TrainTime app.  NBC Connecticut

HEALTH NEWS

  • UConn will host its annual Coaches vs. Cancer game on Jan. 24 at PeoplesBank Arena, where fans can pick up wearable buttons made from submitted photos in section 124 when doors open at 11 a.m. In addition, free cancer screenings (skin, lung, mammogram, colonoscopy) and education will be available during the game.  Connecticut Post
  • UConn Health will expand services and staff at Waterbury Hospital (a community asset) through a public-private partnership that converts it to nonprofit status and invests $225 million over three years. The plan was outlined at a Dec. 19 hearing in Hartford and may close by Jan. 31.  Connecticut Post
  • Access Health CT has extended enrollment until today, allowing local residents to choose a plan for coverage that starts Jan. 1.  WFSB-TV
  • Flu activity in Connecticut was high last week, though not as high as in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. CDC data show a new H3N2 subclade K virus is circulating widely today — officials note that levels may change in the coming weeks.  CT Mirror

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn men's basketball team beat Butler 79-60 on Tuesday at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. Solo Ball (his career-high was 26 points) led four Huskies who scored in double figures as they improved to an 11-1 record.  FOX61
  • Today, UConn women face Iowa at Barclays Center in the Women’s Champions Classic. Coach Geno Auriemma said Iowa’s balanced offense and strong post play could test UConn’s defense.  Connecticut Post
  • Conard boys basketball opened their season with a 60-50 win against Enfield on Dec. 18 in West Hartford. Coach Mark Corey earned his first win and Aidan Fox led with 20 points—boosting the team’s morale for the season ahead.  We-Ha
