ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tractor trailer rolled over on I-84 West on Tuesday morning — the storm created dangerous driving conditions and led to multiple crashes across northern Connecticut.  WFSB-TV
  • A two alarm fire broke out overnight in a three story mixed use building on Albany Avenue—displacing four families.  FOX61
  • Firefighters responded to a heavy fire at 163 to 165 Albany Avenue around 12:26 a.m. today that displaced 14 adults and 8 children in a three-story building—officials said the fire was in the cockloft and a second alarm was triggered as the fire marshal’s office investigates and works with the Red Cross for help.  NBC Connecticut

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Dec 2, Eversource Energy filed a court appeal in New Britain after state regulators rejected its $2.4 billion plan to sell Aquarion Water Co. to the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority on Nov 19. The 134-page appeal argues the agency lacked power to block the sale, and Connecticut officials along with the Attorney General remain opposed—citing concerns over potential rate hikes.  Connecticut Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reporters from Connecticut Public and El Nuevo Día compared grocery prices for a Puerto Rican holiday dinner by shopping in Hartford at CTown Supermarkets and in Guaynabo at an Econo outlet. They found that although ingredient costs were similar, higher sales taxes and shipping rules mean local Puerto Rican households spend a larger share of their income on food.  Connecticut Public
  • Communities across Connecticut are celebrating the holidays this month with events that include tree lightings, parades, public skating and visits from Santa. In Hartford, Winterfest at Bushnell Park runs through January 4 with free skate rentals and festive appearances (including a visit by the Hartford Wolf Pack mascot) while other towns hold their own seasonal gatherings.  Connecticut Public

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A WalletHub study released on November 18 ranked U.S. cities by holiday budgets and found Hartford near the bottom with residents advised to aim for a maximum of $332 while Stamford tops the list at about $2,084—this ranking used data on income, debt and savings. The study evaluated five metrics for 558 cities to determine appropriate holiday spending limits.  Connecticut Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Hartford’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program announced a new sponsorship with Select Physical Therapy — a major rehabilitation provider — that will give five students $15,000 in tuition aid starting in spring and will include a job offer after graduation.  University of Hartford

  • Gov. Ned Lamont and First Lady Annie Lamont invite Connecticut residents to attend the 35th annual holiday open house at the Governor’s Residence on Dec. 5th and Dec. 6th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the event at 990 Prospect Avenue in Hartford offers free shuttle bus service, local musical performances, and a visit from Santa Claus.  We-Ha
  • A Connecticut Supreme Court decision changed foster parents' rights when John Masserio asked DCF to reunite him with his daughter while her foster family battled to adopt her. The ruling gives foster families a legal role in custody cases & allows them to intervene in the process.  CT Mirror

HEALTH NEWS

  • Beloved former Hartford Whalers player Kevin Dineen revealed his pancreatic cancer diagnosis last week—he expressed gratitude for the support of family and friends on social media.  WFSB-TV
  • Aetna changed its coverage so that many patients now find UConn Health out-of-network—this affects about 15,000 patients who may face cancellations and higher costs, and state lawmakers are urging both sides to reach a fair deal soon. UConn Health said it remains hopeful that new contract talks will restore in-network access quickly.  NBC Connecticut
  • The Connecticut Department of Public Health said all newborns should get the Hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth and complete the full series by 18 months—this measure is 98% effective in preventing serious liver disease. Officials noted that the vaccine has been recommended for 35 years and continues to lower hepatitis B rates.  CT News Junkie
