  • Open Hearth Works partnered with Hartford HealthCare to clean Hartford Hospital's campus and hire local residents with a history of incarceration to work on tasks such as leaf removal, snow clearing, and vine trimming.   • The Stowe Center in Hartford uncovered an unpublished slave narrative that tells the life of Dr. Rev. William H. Phillips—a Virginian born into slavery who later became a respected minister in Philadelphia. His story was read publicly on Wednesday night and the center will host more events on Feb. 25, May 27, and July 22 while working with CT Humanities to digitize the manuscript and trace Phillips' descendants.  NBC Connecticut

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Shoppers in Hartford have seen Thanksgiving meal costs drop to $55.18 for a 10-serving dinner even as grocery prices rise—mainly because turkey prices fell 16% from last year. The American Farm Bureau Federation reported that regions like the Northeast are expected to pay about $60.82, as stores offer lower prices to attract holiday buyers.  FOX61

  • A MoveBuddha report said that West Hartford was ranked as America’s most popular college town on November 19, driven by a nearly three—to—one ratio of move-ins over move-outs and an unemployment rate about 12% lower than average, which gives UHart students a lively area with local shops and cultural spots nearby.  University of Hartford

  • The United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut is now asking for donations to its Rapid Response Fund for Homelessness and Housing to help residents in 56 towns avoid shelter use during colder months — the fund started with a $100,000 seed and offers roughly $300 per case.
