COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Channel 3’s Renee DiNino and first responders jumped into freezing water every hour for 24 hours to raise over $130k for Special Olympics CT — the fundraiser aimed to support local athletes and their programs.  WFSB-TV
  • The Honor Them Hockey Foundation held its first exhibition game at the International Skating Center in Simsbury to raise funds for first responder mental health and to honor two Bristol police officers killed in the line of duty. Three teams played with all proceeds— from tickets, raffles and merchandise— going to mental health programs and hockey scholarships as part of a tribute to fallen officers.  WFSB-TV
  • Connecticut Foodshare is ramping up its efforts to combat food insecurity as the holiday season nears—using its network of 600 pantries and mobile sites to help deliver over 40 million meals annually. President and CEO Jason Jakubowski spoke at Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford today and urged support from the community as News 8 will join the GR8 Thanksgiving Food Drive on Nov. 22.  WTNH News 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Several Connecticut roads were closed on Sunday after strong winds knocked down trees and wires, and while cleanup reopened the I-95 southbound lane in Milford—roads in Franklin, Stamford, Easton, West Thompson, and North Branford stayed closed.  WTNH News 8

CRIME NEWS

  • The BBB serving Connecticut warned online shoppers — especially parents searching for in-demand toys — to be on guard against holiday scams that steal personal information and money through phishing, fake offers and job scams. It added that scam reports on TikTok and Instagram have risen and urged buyers to verify offers before purchasing.  Connecticut Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Connecticut International Auto Show returned to Mohegan Sun for a two-day event where car lovers could try out models ranging from exotic and electric to classic vehicles—Kelley Blue Book’s Brian Moody said visitors were encouraged to press buttons and flip switches while a Subaru and Pack Leaders partnership offered a chance to adopt a dog.  NBC Connecticut

  • A Connecticut resident won $40,000 on Friday night by matching four numbers and the Mega Ball with a 4x multiplier in the Mega Millions drawing—winning numbers were 1—8—11—12—57 and the Mega Ball was 7. No details were provided on where the ticket was sold.  NBC Connecticut

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today at 9 a.m.—the state Department of Agriculture will open an online portal at apcp.ct.gov for low income pet owners to apply for vouchers covering sterilizations and vaccinations for up to two pets in the order received. The vouchers, valid for 60 days, offer amounts of $200 for a female dog, $180 for a male dog, $120 for a female cat and $80 for a male cat while owners pay any extra charges.  Connecticut Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 7 UConn will face No. 7 BYU in Boston on Saturday with a tip off at 7 p.m.—the game is part of the Amica Insurance Hall of Fame Series and marks the teams' second meeting since UConn won their first contest in 2003.  WFSB-TV
  • UConn head coach Dan Hurley said on Friday that his team may schedule up to eight high-level nonconference games — a shift from the current blend of marquee matchups and buy games — to boost its NCAA Tournament chances. The Huskies, who beat BYU 86 to 84 on Saturday, will host No. 5 Arizona on Wednesday at Gampel Pavilion.  Connecticut Post
  • Northwest Catholic High School’s girls soccer team lost 3—2 to Foran in the CIAC Class M final on November 15th at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford; the game featured key missed chances and ended with Alexis Lafferty named MVP as Foran secured its first state title.  We-Ha
  • UConn men’s basketball built a 20-point lead against BYU on Celtics' parquet floor and held on for an 86-84 win, with Karaban, Demary Jr., and Reed Jr. each scoring 21 while BYU's freshman Dybantsa scored a game-high 25. The Huskies will host fifth-ranked Arizona at Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.  WFSB-TV
  • Sarah Strong led UConn, the top team, to a 100—68 win over Ohio State with 29 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks while Azzi Fudd and freshman Blanca Quinonez added 19 and 18 points. Ohio State trailed by one point in the first half before UConn built a large lead in the second and third quarters.  NBC Connecticut
