  • Ansonia resident Bobbi Tar was named AARP Connecticut’s 2025 Andrus Award for Community Service winner for her wide-ranging volunteer work with Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter—she chose the Chapter to receive a $3000 donation in recognition of her long-term community service.  CT News Junkie
  • Food pantries are bracing for higher demand as nearly 400,000 Connecticut residents will miss SNAP benefits on Nov. 1 if the government shutdown continues. Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic is low on supplies like milk and eggs + it is calling for donations as 50 to 60 families visit daily.  NBC Connecticut

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday night, a fire in a multifamily home on Elliott Street in Hartford killed one person and displaced three families while a man treated for smoke inhalation was released – firefighters began investigating the cause.  Connecticut Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority approved an annual rate requirement of over $450 million for United Illuminating that is 8% less than requested & may lead to a $9.99 increase for customers using 750 kilowatt hours. The new rate applies from November 1 to October 31 next year.  WTIC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Connecticut witches joined a new witch crawl that began Oct. 1 and connected over 45 magical shops, with nearly 2,300 passports downloaded by Oct. 27—organizers say the event shows a hidden community of practitioners and curious shoppers coming together.  Connecticut Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Coast Guard plans to award Sikorsky a contract to replace its aging H-65 Dolphin helicopters—used since the 1980s—with new Jayhawk models to boost search and rescue and law enforcement operations. The contract will be managed by the Naval Air Systems Command as the service updates its fleet.  Connecticut Post
  • Gov. Lamont on Monday unveiled a plan to provide $3 million in emergency funding to CT Foodshare to support 360,000 families who lost SNAP benefits starting Sunday due to the federal shutdown. The funds from the state Medicaid budget will buy roughly 6 million meals and help local food pantries cope with the crisis — officials warn the money could run out in about two weeks.  CT News Junkie
  • United Illuminating customers will pay about $10 more per month starting next week after the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority approved a $450.7 million revenue plan for the rate year November 1 through October 31, 2026. The decision, announced by PURA on Tuesday, cuts 8% from the proposal UI initially requested—showing a lower revenue requirement than expected.  NBC Connecticut

  • Connecticut Children’s Medical Center received a $50 million gift from philanthropist Tom Golisano on Tuesday to expand pediatric, family-centered and specialist care for children in Connecticut — the largest donation in its history.  WTNH News 8

  • The CIAC boys soccer tournaments for classes LL, L, M and S in Hartford start with a play-in game today at Orange Ave Athletic Complex at 2 p.m. and first rounds beginning Friday, Oct 31, with finals scheduled for Nov 15-16 at Trinity Health Stadium—scores and game times will be updated after each round.  Connecticut Post
  • UConn men's coach Dan Hurley compared the $145 million renovation of PeoplesBank Arena to Rocky Balboa losing his edge in Rocky III during a preseason practice on Oct 27. The revamped arena now features upgraded locker rooms, a new film room and enhanced fan seating — improvements that the Huskies hope will boost team performance in upcoming games.  Connecticut Post
