COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Hartford Marriott Downtown on Wednesday, the third annual ImpaCT Awards honored local heroes who improved healthcare, housing, financial empowerment and education across Connecticut—recognizing individuals and organizations serving underserved communities.  FOX61
  • A memorial service was held Wednesday at the Church of the Incarnation to honor fallen firefighter Robert Sharkevich, who died while fighting the Hawthorne fire in Berlin one year ago. Sharkevich served 25 years with the Hartford Fire Department and 22 years with the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department — he was known as 'Sharkey' to his colleagues.  WTNH News 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Stamford-based Purdue Pharma’s $7.4 billion settlement plan to resolve lawsuits over deceptive OxyContin marketing received nearly unanimous support from over 54,000 creditors on Tuesday and now awaits bankruptcy court approval next month—if approved, the plan will lead to the creation of Knoa Pharma to offer lifesaving treatments while directing about $64 million to Connecticut recovery efforts.  Connecticut Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stop & Shop donated $200,000 to food pantries at Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western Connecticut State Universities to help students gain access to healthy meals & address the needs of nearly half who said they cannot afford balanced food.  News 12 Connecticut

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Bat Week will run from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31 to honor the role of bats in controlling insects and supporting agriculture—helping to dispel myths that bats are blind or dirty. The week also draws attention to protecting species threatened by white-nose syndrome and other environmental challenges.  WFSB-TV

  • Connecticut officials say that if the federal shutdown does not end, SNAP benefits will stop on Nov. 1 and food pantries will face higher demand from low-income families. State leaders are working on emergency food aid as local lines grow and concerns rise about enough food for everyone.  CT Mirror

HEALTH NEWS

  • Connecticut Children’s is building an eight‐story clinical tower in Hartford to add space for pediatric care; the clinical floors will open on Dec. 4—improving access for patients and families.  WTNH News 8
  • Doctors in Hartford will soon use an FDA-authorized AI tool called Clairity Breast to predict a woman's chance of getting breast cancer using routine mammogram images. The test, which may cost less than $200 extra and help identify those at high risk, is set to roll out while insurance coverage is still being determined.  NBC Connecticut

  • The Hartford Wolf Pack faced off with the Springfield Thunderbirds yesterday at 7 p.m. at PeoplesBank Arena in a renewed I-91 rivalry - a contest that included a dinner wager between Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam and Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno as part of the 2025-26 series.  WFSB-TV
