- ➤ Filmmaker Joe Hawk from Hartford is shooting a new political thriller across Connecticut that features secret tunnels dating back to 1957—he is filming scenes in Ansonia, Tolland, Putnam, Farmington, Old Wethersfield and at West Haven PD. - ➤ Stop and Shop has announced it will donate $200,000 to campus food pantries across the state to help students who need food as visits jumped 40%, with $184,000 for pantries and 1,000 care packages given during midterms (a 23% jump from last year). The donation comes as the five-year partnership with CSCU (helping students get food) continues to support student needs. FOX61
- ➤ On October 21, scholars from the Greater Hartford area were honored at a breakfast on the UHart campus where Donald Allan congratulated them for earning Scholars of Excellence awards funded by a $3 million gift from Stanley Black & Decker. The program gives students scholarships averaging more than $35,000, monthly mentoring, and first-round internship interviews — key steps to building a strong local workforce. University of Hartford

- ➤ One year ago, the Hawthorne Drive fire in Berlin burned over 100 acres and claimed the life of one firefighter, straining local and state fire resources during a dry fall. State officials and Berlin fire chief Jonn Massirio have boosted fire safety education and training—using the Fire Safe CT program—to help prevent similar events in the future. NBC Connecticut

- ➤ OPM Secretary Jeffrey Beckham said Connecticut will end FY 2026 with a $322M surplus, which is $5.5M higher than last month’s forecast. He noted that state revenues are $146.4M above budget and spending in major departments has exceeded estimates while the numbers may change as the fiscal year progresses. CT News Junkie
- ➤ More than 150,000 residents with Access Health CT will receive letters this week warning that uncertainty over federal financial aid from the government shutdown may lead to sharply higher health insurance costs next year. Gov. Lamont has urged residents to delay enrollment until updated subsidy details are available (estimated premiums could rise up to six times), which may force some to drop coverage. WFSB-TV

- ➤ The UConn women’s basketball team was picked by Big East coaches to win the conference title this season and will play an exhibition game on Oct. 26 at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford while six players earned preseason honors — with Sarah Strong named as Preseason Player of the Year for the defending NCAA champions. - ➤ St. John's earned the top spot in a Big East preseason poll released Tuesday with seven votes for first place—and UConn placed second with four votes.
