  • Over 1,000 residents gathered at Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and raised more than $400,000 for research and support services—demonstrating strong local commitment to the fight against the disease.  WFSB-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A child was left on a school bus in East Hartford last Friday after falling asleep under a seat because the driver asked the monitor to do a check — First Student said the child was safely returned to his family while the driver was placed on administrative leave as police investigated the breach of protocol.  WFSB-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Play It Again Sports has closed its old West Hartford store and is now taking online orders at its new location, 635 New Park Ave., Building 5—where a soft opening is planned pending town inspections. Other local updates include Crêpes Choupette preparing to open in the former Donut Crazy space and Pink Petal Bakery & Cafe now serving customers at Westfarms.  We-Ha

  • Petitioners for 'Mimi's Law' asked for stricter oversight of home-schooled children after 11-year-old Jacqueline 'Mimi' Torres-Garcia suffered abuse and malnourishment before she died and her mother, her mother's boyfriend, and her aunt were arrested—petitioners urge regular in-person checks to help prevent future tragedies.  Connecticut Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • During the weekend, the 50th Glastonbury Apple Harvest & Music Festival drew more than 25,000 people to enjoy apples, live music, food trucks, and rides. Organizers said the event celebrated fall traditions and brought the community together.  WTNH News 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lauralton Hall held its 20th annual All Girls Science Olympics on Saturday as students from fifth to eighth grade put their problem-solving skills to the test — tackling challenges from flight simulators to forensic crime scenes. The head of school said the event was meant to boost confidence, collaboration and curiosity in STEM — with forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee also attending.  News 12 Connecticut

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State forester Chris Martin warned that Connecticut could see more wildfires this fall as dry conditions persist after record drought last year and over 220 fires ignited between October 20 and November 20. Local fire departments remain on high alert—residents are urged to follow safety guidelines to help prevent human-caused fires.  FOX61

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain communities will celebrate Diwali today as Connecticut officially makes it a state holiday after Gov. Ned Lamont signed the bill in June—Hamden resident Rajeev Pahuja, who drafted the legislation two years ago, was honored by West Haven for his work and noted the change will support religious accommodations at work and school.  WTNH News 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hartford HealthCare won an auction to buy Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals for $86.1 million, and the purchase now awaits approval from a bankruptcy judge and state regulators. Once approved, the two hospitals will join its network, making the system the largest in Connecticut by licensed beds.  CT Insider

SPORTS NEWS

  • Conard girls soccer played a scoreless match against Bristol Central on Senior Night at Robert McKee Stadium in West Hartford on Oct. 17 — the team honored nine seniors including injured player Annabel Tracy in a final appearance. Their record moved to 5-8-2 — a win or tie in the next game against Hall will secure a spot in the state tournament.  We-Ha
  • Week six of high school football in Connecticut featured special plays by Northwest Catholic, Killingly and Fairfield Prep. Northwest Catholic's quarterback Vincent Burbank threw a touchdown pass to Kayden Davis in a 14 to 7 win — boosting the team's record to 5 to 0, while Killingly used a reverse pass trick play for a 42 to 7 win and Fairfield Prep's T’Varis Newkirk made a one-handed interception in a 24 to 6 win.  WFSB-TV
  • UConn earned its first-ever road win at Boston College by defeating the Eagles 38-23 on Saturday as quarterback Joe Fagnano threw for 362 yards and five touchdowns — his best performance of the season that helped the Huskies improve to 5-2. They will travel next week to Rice Stadium for their next game at 3 p.m.  FOX61
  • On October 17, Hall High School’s boys soccer team lost 2-1 to Lewis Mills on Senior Night after a strong win against Northwest Catholic—coach Seguro said the loss fueled their resolve ahead of Tuesday’s game against Conard at 6 p.m.  We-Ha
