  • James Beard nominated chef Renee Touponce launched her frozen empanadas brand, From Mom, for retail sale at select stores in Connecticut and Rhode Island to honor her mother's recipe and legacy. The beef empanadas use hand-rolled dough with cheese, sofrito and beef, and a portion of proceeds will support local programs & school nutrition funding.  Connecticut Post
  • Sikorsky exhibited its new U-Hawk cargo drone at the Army expo in Washington, D.C.—the pilotless design replaces the cockpit with clamshell doors that boost cargo capacity by 25%. The drone, assembled in Stratford and Bridgeport, will perform test flights next year as part of efforts to improve military cargo operations.  Connecticut Post

  • Dozens of Jeepers drove along Clark Street to honor 12-year-old Jacqueline 'Mimi' Torres-Garcia—whose remains were found last week—as State Representative Bobby Sanchez announced he is working on Mimi’s Law to improve oversight of child welfare cases and prevent future tragedies.  NBC Connecticut

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Oct 16, a Stanley Black and Decker executive recognized University of Hartford's top scholars at a breakfast in West Hartford. The program, funded by a $3 million gift, offers scholarships averaging over $35,000, mentoring sessions and guaranteed first-round internship interviews to help grow the local workforce.  FOX61

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut commercial beekeepers reported record hive losses this season as pesticides, parasites and loss of wild habitat drove colonies down to levels not seen in decades. Experts said new EPA-approved treatments for mites and a law banning neonicotinoids on turf areas set for 2027 may help ease the strain + protect the crops that rely on bee pollination.  Connecticut Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thousands gathered at the state Capitol and along Capital Avenue in Hartford on Oct. 18 for the No Kings rally—an event protesting alleged authoritarian overreach and celebrating democratic values. Leaders including US Rep. John Larson and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz spoke as the peaceful protest joined over 2,600 rallies nationwide.  CT News Junkie

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a bye week, the UConn Huskies beat Boston College 38-23 on the road as their offense rallied in the second half with quarterback Joe Fagnano throwing for 362 yards and five touchdowns—Skyler Bell and Juice Vereen added key plays. The Huskies will travel to Houston next weekend to face Rice—hoping to extend their win streak to five games.  WFSB-TV
  • High school boys in Connecticut ran in several cross country meets during league championship week, with Amity's Luke Cushing winning the SCC 5000 meters at East Shore Park on October 15 — other winners included Portland's Breckin Burke and East Lyme's Sam Leone, each capturing regional titles in their events.  Connecticut Post
  • UConn defeated Boston College 38-23 on Saturday, ending its long road losing streak and earning its first power conference win away from Chestnut Hill. Quarterback Joe Fagano led the team with nearly 400 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns—pushing the Huskies to a 5-2 record this season.  Connecticut Post
  • UConn guard Aidan Mahaney said he would choose the Huskies again even after playing fewer than 20 minutes per game last season due to foul trouble and a reduced role. He left UConn to join UC Santa Barbara and said the move challenged him — a test he is proud of.  Connecticut Post
