- ➤ Camp Courant will host its first-ever Fall Festival to support the camp and celebrate autumn—organizers say the event is planned as a new seasonal community gathering. FOX61
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Ned Lamont honored four Connecticut schools picked by the federal Department of Education for a Blue Ribbon award even after the program was cancelled—HALS Academy, Gildersleeve School, Green Acres Elementary and Weston Intermediate were recognized for strong student scores and closing gaps in performance. - ➤ Archbishop Christopher Coyne announced that Hartford will have a new Catholic school when the Catholic Academy of Hartford opens in fall next year—starting with prekindergarten through 2nd grade and adding one grade each year so students can continue through 8th grade. The school will serve Hartford residents with an affordable tuition model and welcomes families regardless of faith. WTNH News 8

- ➤ DEEP experts are advising Hartford residents to secure trash, pet food and birdfeeders—40 bear home entries have been reported across 16 towns so far this year. They warned that bears search for human food during fall hyperphagia when they can eat up to 20,000 calories a day to prepare for winter. WTNH News 8

- ➤ State officials announced on Oct. 9th that Connecticut provided $8M for cold weather emergency shelters — $4.5M to five agencies and $3.5M to 11 nonprofits — while advocates work to secure an extra $1M during a special legislative session to meet their $9M goal as unsheltered homelessness sharply increased. - ➤ Hartford has partnered with Google to offer real-time translation during City Council and Board of Education meetings — the partnership uses Google Cloud Translation AI in the city's 311 services so non-English-speaking residents can access local government more easily. WTNH News 8
- ➤ A school superintendent testified on Thursday in a federal trial in Hartford—against former state official Kosta Diamantis, who faces bribery and extortion charges. WFSB-TV

- ➤ UConn will play an exhibition basketball game against Michigan State in Hartford on Tuesday, Oct. 28 (coverage begins at 7 p.m. on WFSB Channel 3 with a pregame show before tip at 7:30 p.m.) and it will stream on UConn Plus for a one-time fee of $7.99. WFSB-TV
- ➤ Thousands of runners are set to compete in the annual Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon tomorrow, starting downtown and finishing at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park—road closures will affect West Hartford, East Hartford, and South Windsor. More than 10,000 participants will run in races of different distances, each honoring their personal goals and local charitable causes. FOX61
