- ➤ Sikorsky won federal contracts for heavy cargo and troop carrier helicopters and is finalizing a deal to build nearly 100 new Black Hawks over four years—Triumph Group, with 700 workers in West Hartford and Windsor, said smaller local firms produce about 40,000 parts per helicopter to keep flights safe. - ➤ On Oct 3, a federal judge ruled that former chief public defender TaShun Bowden-Lewis's civil rights suit alleging racial discrimination and unfair treatment by the Public Defender Services Commission may proceed—she argues that her firing differed from how white colleagues were treated. - ➤ On Friday, Connecticut National Guard members left Bradley Air National Guard Base for a year-long deployment to the Middle East after training in Texas before moving on to Kuwait, Jordan, and Syria while family members expressed pride and Governor Lamont warned that payments may be delayed due to a government shutdown. - ➤ Jessenia Martinez Ortega, executive secretary to Mayor Connor Martin, bridged the gap for Spanish-speaking residents by linking the Latino community to local government and ensuring smooth office operations in East Hartford. She was hired on August 27th after a decisive call from Mayor Walsh at 8:02 p.m.—and she now promotes Latina leadership by joining the Latina Leadership Institute. Connecticut Public
- ➤ Eligible Connecticut voters who meet certain conditions can request absentee ballots for the Nov. 4 municipal election because the constitutional amendment for no-excuse absentee voting has not yet taken effect—ballots are limited to those serving in the armed forces, out of town, sick, disabled, affected by religious restrictions or serving as an election official at another polling place. Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas said voters may return ballots by mail, drop them in a ballot box or hand them to their Town Clerk while early in-person voting runs from Oct. 20 through Nov. 2. - ➤ During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Kara Rizzardi, an assistant clinical professor at Sacred Heart University and breast cancer survivor diagnosed in 2017, shared her story to show that she will need lifelong treatment amid low funding—she also serves on the board of the Cancer Couch Foundation.
