BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Airlines will end service at Bradley International Airport effective Oct. 31 — the airline said it will contact affected passengers to offer refunds. The Connecticut Airport Authority noted that other carriers already serve nonstop routes to the same destinations.  CT Mirror

CULTURE NEWS

  • Connecticut will host many events this October as music fans will see Keith Urban perform on Oct.3 at Mohegan Sun and Stevie Nicks on Oct.7 at PeoplesBank Arena, while Katt Williams is set for a Halloween show in Bridgeport — fairs include a garlic festival in Bethlehem and county events in Harwinton and Portland from Oct.3-5. A Norman Rockwell exhibit at New Britain Museum of American Art and the Mooooncake Fest in Bridgeport on Oct.11-12 will offer more cultural activities this month.  Connecticut Post
  • Today, the state launches the Connecticut Pizza Trail to celebrate 100 pizzerias and honor its long apizza tradition with over 1,300 pizza restaurants—most of which are family-run. Chief marketing officer Anthony Anthony said the trail will bring global attention to local businesses and help boost tourism.  NBC Connecticut

  • Bryan Terrell Clark, known for his role as George Washington in Hamilton, will speak at the University of Hartford at 5 p.m. on October 22 at Wilde Auditorium—he will also lead a masterclass at The Hartt School to share his journey from Baltimore to Broadway.  University of Hartford

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ned Lamont discussed the impacts of the government shutdown at an 11 a.m. news conference Wednesday — he urged calm while noting that essential workers, including TSA and air traffic controllers, continued working.  WFSB-TV
  • Officials warned travelers at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks that longer lines may occur today because TSA (working without pay due to the government shutdown that began midnight Wednesday) is short-staffed. Federal employees have been furloughed and air traffic controllers are under strain (with tens of thousands affected) as the shutdown continues.  WFSB-TV
  • A diverse coalition of unions, advocates and legislators gathered at the Legislative Office Building on Oct. 1 to urge Gov. Lamont and the Assembly to call a special session—using almost $2 billion in surplus funds to protect social safety net programs from federal cuts that will lower SNAP benefits for 42,000 residents as leaders face a November 1 deadline.  CT News Junkie
  • Town officials in West Hartford have installed a concurrent pedestrian phase—giving walkers more time to cross the street safely.  FOX61
  • Connecticut's attorney general joined a multi-state lawsuit Wednesday against a $100 million deal between Zillow and Redfin that removed Redfin from the multifamily rental ad market—an agreement he said could push up rent for families. The suit seeks a permanent injunction to end the anticompetitive deal and help keep rental costs fair.  FOX61

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Tichianaa Armah of Community Health Center Inc. worked Tuesday night to reach Medicare telehealth patients whose eligibility expired at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday due to the federal shutdown—leaving vulnerable patients, including one with severe anxiety and depression, at risk for emergency hospitalization if timely care is not available.  Connecticut Post

  • UConn’s Sarah Strong worked on her communication skills at the first practice when coach Geno Auriemma and director Anna LaBonte led mock interviews—helping her show more of her personality on the court.  Connecticut Post
  • The UConn women's basketball team was named the No.1 overall seed in ESPN's bracketology and will start its season on Nov. 4 at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Head coach Geno Auriemma and star player Azzi Fudd hope to win a 13th national title — a goal following last year's win — as they face tough matchups in Region 1.  Connecticut Post
