GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport staff have been working without pay today as the government shut down at midnight when lawmakers failed to reach a funding deal—tens of thousands of federal employees were furloughed.  WFSB-TV
  • Today, new state laws go into effect in Connecticut that require e-bike riders to wear helmets and ban those under 16 from riding Class 3 e-bikes. Towns can now fine organizers and spectators of street takeovers—license suspensions are increased—while first‐cousin marriage is banned and police cannot handcuff children under 14 except when public safety is at risk.  WTNH News 8
  • Gov. Ned Lamont proclaimed Military Suicide and Remembrance Day on Tuesday to honor veterans who struggled with mental health, and at a ceremony at the Legislative Office Building Samantha Sirois and Ed Randsall received a citation from state Rep. Rebecca Martinez—state lawmakers plan to propose legislation to make the day permanent and support veteran mental health.  CT News Junkie
  • Connecticut officials said they are ready to manage a potential federal government shutdown today if Congress does not reach a funding deal—Governor Lamont stated that current reserves will cover immediate needs but warned prolonged delays may harm programs such as WIC and child care services.   • Today, TSA agents and air traffic controllers at Bradley International Airport are working without pay as a government shutdown has furloughed tens of thousands of federal employees. HEALTH NEWS

  • Hartford HealthCare submitted an $86 million bid for Manchester and Rockville hospitals in a bankruptcy auction scheduled for Oct.22 and if approved it will become the largest network in Connecticut with 3,282 licensed beds—this move aims to expand care access amid financial troubles at the hospitals.  Connecticut Post
  • Connecticut hospitals will soon give new moms orange bracelets labeled 'I Gave Birth' so emergency workers can spot postpartum complications—Hartford hospitals are training staff and community providers to act during the high-risk 12-week period.  WTNH News 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Yankees and Red Sox will meet in the AL Wild Card round this week, and only residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania may buy tickets, making Connecticut the only New England state with access.   • Former NFL player Chris Baker, a Windsor High School alumnus, has been banned from football events for recording practices and entering locker rooms without permission — school officials said his actions undermined coaching.
