CULTURE NEWS

  • Hartford’s Office of Arts and Culture and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving launched a mobile app that offers a self-guided tour of public art—sculptures, murals and more with sound clips, artist statements and a rewards system that encourages exploration. The app will attract residents and visitors looking to experience Hartford’s art culture in a new way.  FOX61
  • Emmy Award-winning director Pedro Bermúdez is filming his coming-of-age short film in Hartford this October. He held a local casting call for more than 20 roles—mostly local talent—while some actors came from New York to adapt Carmen Maria Machado’s story.  FOX61
  • The chilling crime thriller ROPE will come to Hartford Stage as actors Fiona Robberson and Mark Benninghofen preview the new show—adding excitement to the local theater scene.  FOX61

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Federal test scores showed U.S. 12th graders lost ground in math and reading while Connecticut education advocates voiced concern over persistent achievement gaps despite improvements on state tests. Advocates said increased investment in education is needed to help low-income students and children of color overcome challenges left by the COVID-19 pandemic — the data highlights issues that must be addressed.  Connecticut Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Eversource was named a Tree Line USA utility for the second year by the Arbor Day Foundation—this accreditation shows its commitment to safe electric service and proper tree care. The award reflects the company's focus on trimming hazard trees and educating customers on choosing the right tree for the right place.  FOX61

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut will expand protection for survivors of sexual assault and trafficking starting Oct. 1— the law makes it illegal to deny housing, jobs, or credit based on past violence and offers survivors a new option to have their sexual assault kits tested without a police report while state employees receive training on victim support.  FOX61
  • Chairman David Wright of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission visited Hartford Thursday to shift oversight of radioactive materials to DEEP—making Connecticut the 40th agreement state—while Governor Lamont discussed plans to expand nuclear power, including easing reactor approvals and exploring new reactor options at Millstone.  NBC Connecticut
  • The Hartford Planning and Zoning Commission approved a plan to convert the former Hartford Trade School at 110 Washington St. into 57 affordable apartments—displacing the existing warming center—while the city seeks a new location for it. Developers Arch Communities LLC and Boston Communities LLC will begin construction no earlier than May 1 if the City Council gives final approval in October.  Connecticut Post

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome — also known as PCOS — affects about 10 million people and is a leading cause of infertility with signs like irregular periods, weight gain, acne and excess hair. Dr. Wong from Hartford HealthCare said treatment options include birth control, medicines, surgery and lifestyle changes to help manage the condition.  NBC Connecticut

  • Coach Auriemma said he is worried about the team’s first practice on Monday as key players have left and several new recruits must prove themselves. He expects that the season will improve as leaders emerge during scrimmages—especially with a talented core already in place.  Connecticut Post
