Good morning, Hartford. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 25th of September.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • PeoplesBank Arena reopens on October 17 after a $145 million renovation that upgraded seats, loge boxes, bunker suites, and event spaces—transforming the old XL Center and Civic Center into a modern venue. Officials expect the new features will attract more concerts and events downtown—boosting local vibrancy.  NBC Connecticut
  • Hartford HealthCare and UConn Health plan to buy Prospect’s Connecticut hospitals that do not own the land — Medical Properties Trust will raise rents and collect overdue charges in a bankruptcy auction set for October 22. Hartford HealthCare bid on Manchester Memorial and Rockville General while UConn Health seeks a clean deal for Waterbury Hospital.  Connecticut Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Freedom Reads, a Connecticut nonprofit, built bookcases from wood and delivered them as Freedom Libraries to York Correctional Institution in Niantic last summer so that incarcerated people could access new books. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report from the Commonwealth Fund said Connecticut ranked 42nd out of 51 for poor air quality and 6th worst among New England states (its lowest score in the region) while noting risks from extreme heat and vulnerable healthcare facilities.  Connecticut Post

FINANCE NEWS

  • A ticket sold at Citgo on Farmington Ave in Kensington won $1 million in the Powerball drawing on Monday — it matched five numbers but not the Powerball. The winning numbers were 3, 29, 42, 46, 59 with Powerplay X3 — the next drawing will be on Wednesday with an estimated jackpot of $127 million.  NBC Connecticut

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 550 Connecticut residents were notified on September 24th that their personal data was exposed in a Brightstar Lottery Group corporate breach that did not affect the state lottery system. Brightstar has hired Kroll to provide free 24-month identity monitoring—residents are advised to review their records and follow the instructions in their notification letters.  Connecticut Post
  • Connecticut lawmakers and Gov. Lamont have about one month to decide if part of last fiscal year’s $2.5 billion surplus will be used to repair programs hurt by federal cuts from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Critics warn this move may weaken funds set aside to pay down the state’s growing pension debt — a key safety net.  CT Mirror
  • The Hartford Land Bank announced two housing projects in the North End on Sept. 23—homes at 597 and 602 Garden Street feature three bedrooms and one or two bathrooms per unit—and construction will last for four months so one family can purchase each home.  CT News Junkie
  • Mayor Arunan Arulampalam said the city will demolish an old building at 150 Windsor St. — an eyesore along highway 91 near Dunkin' Donuts Park — and use state funds to build a multi-million-dollar AI center to boost the workforce and link the North End with Downtown. The demolition is planned by year-end and the center will begin construction once the state grant is awarded.  FOX61
