  • Volunteers in Somers are building a playground to honor four siblings who died in a January 2024 house fire, led by the Where Angels Play Foundation at the site where they once played—final touches are being added this week with a ribbon-cutting set for Sunday at 10:30 a.m.  NBC Connecticut

  • An Enfield town employee who was struck and killed by a driver was laid to rest on Wednesday, September 17th as community members remembered longtime worker Jamie Nickerson.  WFSB-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hartford HealthCare will take over the Girl Scouts headquarters at 332 Washington St — near Hartford Hospital — later this year and plans to repurpose the site, though details have not been shared. Girl Scouts will close their Hartford retail store on Nov 14 and vacate the building by Nov 30 while relocating to a temporary office.  Connecticut Post
  • Longtime WFSB anchor Nicole Nalepa announced she will leave the station after nearly 12 years—she hosted Great Day at 9A and will reveal her next career move soon—marking the end of her run with the network.  Connecticut Post

  • Country star Riley Green is scheduled to perform at Hartford’s Xfinity Theatre on August 14, 2026—as part of his Cowboy As It Gets tour. Fans can buy presale tickets today at 10 a.m.—using the code HARTFORD.  Connecticut Post
  • Connecticut celebrated Mexican Independence Day at the State Capitol on September 16 with live music by Mariachi Laureles del Monte and a dance performance by Ballet Folklorico Alma de Mexico — the celebration marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and honored the long struggle for freedom.  CT News Junkie

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An exclusive survey with the Connecticut Education Association shows nearly 50% of teachers have been threatened by students—more than 70% are aware of similar risks in Hartford schools. Retired teacher Heidi Kapszukiewicz, who left after two injuries from student altercations, said schools and parents must help improve safety.  WFSB-TV

  • Tim O’Connor, a 73-year-old motorcyclist from Wallingford with 40 years of racing experience, competed on September 8 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and finished second in the Formula 60 division—he plans to continue racing part-time for another decade.  Connecticut Post
  • Paige Bueckers was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year after a standout season that saw her score a record-setting 44-point game against Los Angeles in August—her award was presented on the Jennifer Hudson Show, making UConn the first school to have both NBA and WNBA rookies of the year in the same season.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Connecticut high school girls volleyball teams showed strong play last week as players like Maya Thompson and Reagan Bean logged high kills and low errors while teams earned wins and kept tough defenses.   • On Tuesday, September 16, Mercy girls soccer beat Amity 2 to 0 at Xavier High School in Middletown with second-half goals from Lainey Riegler and Peyton Hussey. The win moves Mercy to a 4 to 0 to 1 record and coach Marcus Harley said the team held strong on defense—goalkeeper Emily Hickey made eight saves.  Connecticut Post
