COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leon Haberski, a security guard at Bennet Academy in Manchester, saved three students from choking over the last 18 months and received a Lifesaving Award from the American Red Cross for his quick first aid skills.  WFSB-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, 33-year-old Hartford man Joshoa Roman, president of Loose Cannonz motorcycle club, was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to trafficking fentanyl and cocaine and will report to prison on Oct. 22.  WTNH News 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents in West Hartford are calling for a change in discipline policy at William Hall High School after star athlete Lukas Schreiber died by suicide two weeks following a disciplinary meeting over bullying accusations—his mother said losing his swim team captaincy contributed to his struggles, and despite meeting with board members Tuesday, no policy change has been made. She fears the current system could push another vulnerable student over the edge.  NBC Connecticut

FINANCE NEWS

  • Monday night's drawing did not produce a 1.2-billion jackpot winner, but a ticket sold in Connecticut won $150,000 by matching four numbers and the Powerball with a Powerplay of X3 while another ticket won $50,000 by matching four numbers and the Powerball without the Powerplay. The next drawing is tonight with an estimated jackpot of 1.3-billion.  NBC Connecticut

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Lamont and CT Foodshare officials announced that a new state program will give CT Foodshare $3 million in fiscal 2026 and $6 million in fiscal 2027 to buy food for local pantries—funds that must be used only for food purchases and not for overhead or salaries—aimed at easing rising food insecurity amid reduced federal support.  CT News Junkie
  • After a mass shooting in Minnesota last week killed two children and injured more than a dozen others, state Sen. Richard Blumenthal and local advocacy groups called for tighter gun control in Connecticut. Blumenthal returned to Washington and will push his proposed Assault Weapons Ban of 2025 — a move to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines — as he seeks bipartisan support.  FOX61

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Travelers Championship in Cromwell won Newsweek’s Fans’ Choice Award as the Best PGA TOUR Tournament Event — the only tournament in the Northeast — and organizers said it raised over $4 million for more than 200 charities. Tournament officials said the win shows strong fan support and sets the stage for next year's event.  WTNH News 8
