COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Hartford Fire Department and American Red Cross will work together on September 11 to install free smoke alarms and share fire safety tips for local families—this effort is part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign to reduce fire risks.  City of Hartford

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday morning closed two right lanes of I-84 eastbound between exits 46 and 48 in Hartford — state police said there were no reported injuries and no cause has been identified.  WFSB-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Verizon plans to buy Frontier but the merger is at risk as California regulators question the company’s move to end DEI programs—Connecticut already approved the deal on June 11. Talks continue in California as the companies work to meet state rules while following federal orders.  Connecticut Post

CRIME NEWS

  • Hartford Councilman Alexander Thomas, who was arrested for allegedly stealing $15,000 from a church last year, is now accused of improperly using a city purchase card at a conference — officials confirmed no city funds were lost as his travel reimbursement was reduced.  Connecticut Post
  • East Hartford man Tylon Kelly was arrested on first-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace charges after he, in March, called Orchard Hill Elementary to pick up a child despite a protective order and threatened a lockdown while making racially charged remarks—police said his actions prompted review of his extensive criminal record.  CT Insider

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Hartford Public Schools introduced a new cybersecurity class today—this program will help students gain important tech skills as they return to school.  WFSB-TV
  • Teachers are starting the new school year by using tools—such as zones of regulation—to help students learn to manage their emotions and improve classroom behavior. Kate Dias from the Connecticut Education Association said teachers will work with administrators and parents to build a safer, more supportive environment today.  NBC Connecticut

HEALTH NEWS

  • A UConn study found that while fatal opioid overdoses in CT declined, nonfatal cases sharply increased — nearly half of the 199 study participants reported an overdose. The research noted high rates of opioid dependence and mental health issues and will guide pilot programs to improve addiction treatment.  Connecticut Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • A list of 25 CIAC boys cross country runners was highlighted as top athletes for the 2025 season, with performances last year—like Luke Cushing’s second-place finish—pointing to strong potential this fall.
