Good morning, Hartford. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 14th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • A Danbury man, Hunter Leili, was arrested Monday night for speeding after driving at 110—120 mph near I-84 and nearly hitting a tow truck operator, and he will appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 26 for charges including failing to renew his vehicle registration.  WFSB-TV
  • Federal prosecutors finalized a witness list for Kosta Diamantis’ corruption trial that includes over 40 people such as state workers and leaders from big construction firms. The trial will start on October 6 and may call local figures like Hartford’s former city engineer Frank Dellaripa to speak — the list could show how school building contracts were managed — and help clear up questions about state business.  CT Mirror
  • Kristen Carotenuto, a New York nurse, was sentenced in Hartford to five months in prison for stealing hydromorphone and fentanyl from a Stamford clinic—she will also serve three years of supervised release, pay a $5,000 fine, and has surrendered her nursing license.  FOX61

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Connecticut will launch its sales tax holiday this Sunday, exempting clothing under $100 from the 6.35% tax until Aug. 23—critics say the week-long event delays purchases rather than offering lasting relief while some local business groups expect it to boost retail.  CT Mirror

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Connecticut's student loan reimbursement program reopens Friday for eligible residents who attended a Connecticut college, university, or trade school—those who have lived in the state for at least five years and made student loan payments between 2020 and 2024—and applicants earning under $125,000 must also complete volunteer service to qualify for up to $5,000 per year for four years.  News 12 Connecticut
  • A record 16 Hartford Promise Scholars joined UHart as first-year students yesterday—each eligible for up to $100,000 over four years from the Greater Futures Scholarship Fund through Hartford Promise, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and Stanley Black & Decker.  University of Hartford
  • Today the Capitol Region Education Council will host its annual back-to-school giveaway in Hartford as families face rising school supply costs—estimated to be 10 to 15% higher in recent years.  FOX61

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General William Tong said the U.S. District Court granted a preliminary injunction that stops DHS from using Medicaid data and HHS from sharing it for immigration enforcement purposes. Connecticut joined a coalition of 20 states on July 1—arguing that the transfer of personal health data violates the law and puts immigrant families at risk by making them avoid needed care.  CT News Junkie
