- ➤ At day three of the Raul Valle murder trial, 21-year-old Tyler Rich testified about a deadly house party held three years ago in Shelton—where a fight led to the fatal stabbing of Jimmy McGrath and Raul Valle, then 16, became involved in the altercation. WFSB-TV
- ➤ ICE arrested Orlando Diaz-Cebada on June 12 for the alleged murder of a law enforcement officer after he illegally re-entered Connecticut, and Mexican authorities issued a warrant for aggravated homicide in connection with ties to Los Pochos gang+ he had been deported before. NBC Connecticut
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ According to a SmartAsset analysis using MIT data, the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford area is the fifth-most expensive metro to raise a child with an annual cost of $33,149—up 3.16% from last year. The study compared expenses like childcare, housing, food, medical and transportation costs and also found the Boston-Cambridge-Newton area to be more expensive while Birmingham proved the least costly. - ➤ UConn is preparing major changes after a state gap and federal funding cuts left it with a budget deficit of over $100M for fiscal year 2026. University leaders will raise enrollment and trim spending by reducing temporary jobs and cutting department budgets by about 4% — steps that may impact research funding and staff positions. - ➤ Two Connecticut universities — Yale University and the University of Connecticut — are featured in the U.S. News and World Report rankings based on research reputation and academic output. - ➤ Gov. Ned Lamont signed a new law on Monday that raises penalties for street takeovers after legislators passed Senate Bill 1284 by margins of 144-4 in the House and 34-2 in the Senate. The law imposes a two-year license suspension for drivers with three or more violations and lets towns confiscate ATVs, dirt bikes and mini-motorcycles used in these events. CT News Junkie
