  • On Monday — the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa — 99-year-old veteran Edward Apicella, Sr. shared his World War II experiences in Hartford at an event hosted by the chief state's attorney, where state leaders gathered to honor his service as part of the U.S. Army’s 96th Infantry Division and his role as the oldest living member of the Waterbury Police Department.  WTNH News 8
  • Camp Courant — the oldest free summer camp in the country — is welcoming Hartford kids for a summer escape as it marks its 131st year.  FOX61

CRIME NEWS

  • A Danbury man pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges after a $245M Bitcoin theft led to his parents being kidnapped—he has agreed to testify against his co-defendants—and he faces up to 24 years in prison and possible deportation.  WTNH News 8
  • Louis Clayton, a 62-year-old from East Hartford, was arrested on June 20 after biting and choking an elderly victim in South Windsor on May 18—police used a Taser to subdue him before hospital evaluation and he was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond with a court appearance scheduled for Monday morning.  WFSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hartford Public Library is serving as a cooling center for people facing high heat and humidity over the next few days — library hours remain unchanged. Residents are encouraged to visit any branch during regular hours to find relief.  WTIC
  • Gov. Ned Lamont vetoed a bill that would have allowed striking workers to receive unemployment benefits after 14 consecutive days on strike—stating the move was meant to protect growing jobs in Connecticut. The measure passed the legislature and would have taken effect Dec. 14.  CT News Junkie
  • Gov. Lamont signed Public Act 25-80 on Monday, which raises penalties and fines for people involved in street takeovers and grants police more power to act. The law lets cities enforce local rules to seize and destroy vehicles used in illegal races—helping keep roads safe.  FOX61

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a press conference Monday at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, Planned Parenthood CEO Amanda Skinner said the Senate's proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act would defund Planned Parenthood and force clinic closures that could leave nearly 51,000 patients—with more than 23,000 on Medicaid—without essential care. She warned the bill will drive patients to delay treatment or rely on overcrowded emergency rooms, risking further strain on public health.  CT News Junkie
