  • Yordy Sanchez, a maintenance worker at the Ramada Inn in Windsor Locks, saved a 2-year-old girl when she became unresponsive in a pool last August (using his training as a military reservist) and later received a national award on Thursday.  FOX61
  • Hartford firefighters rescued ducklings from a storm drain on Saturday around 6 a.m. at New Park Avenue after a CT Transit supervisor and Stop + Shop customers spotted a frantic mother duck; they entered the drain to carefully remove each duckling and reunite them with their mom.  WTNH News 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Connecticut State University held two spring commencement ceremonies at Arute Field in New Britain to mark the Class of 2026's milestone. The events celebrated graduates who completed their studies with a special ceremony.  Connecticut Post
  • Five fifth graders from Bugbee Elementary in West Hartford were honored at the Connecticut Student Writers Award ceremony on May 14 at the Jorgensen Center at UConn (Pietro Belli earned a Gold/Platinum honor) for their nonfiction work (which also included silver and honorable mention awards).  We-Ha
  • Conard High School held its Junior Prom at the Bristol Events Center on Friday, May 15. Students and families enjoyed outdoor photo sessions in West Hartford + a rainbow appeared as skies cleared before the gala.  We-Ha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut’s Insurance Department fined all five major health insurers for mental health parity violations during Mental Health Awareness Month. Officials will require corrective action plans + improved reimbursement rates and provider networks to meet state law and ensure fair care.  CT Mirror

HEALTH NEWS

  • Straus Family Creamery is recalling organic ice creams (pint and quart sizes) from local stores and 16 other states due to a risk of metal fragments; affected products, which were on shelves since May 4, should be discarded without return.  NBC Connecticut
  • West Hartford’s Office of Emergency Management is hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross on June 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Elmwood Community Center’s Auditorium (donations help keep life-saving blood supplies available).  We-Ha
