BUSINESS NEWS

  • Machinists at Pratt & Whitney in Middletown and East Hartford have been on strike since May 5 as they demand new contract guarantees to secure their jobs amid worries that production might move out of state — union leader Wayne McCarthy says additional safeguards are needed. Pratt & Whitney officials maintain that the new plan retains current job protections, but workers remain anxious about long-term security.  CT Insider

CRIME NEWS

  • A melee during a funeral at Gospel Lighthouse Apostolic Church on Friday, May 9 left three people injured and led police to arrest Joshua Smellie of Spring Street on charges including assault with a firearm—Mothers United Against Violence held a vigil on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the church to support the affected community.  Connecticut Post
  • A Hartford federal grand jury convicted David “Saint” Marshall, 40, of sex trafficking and forcing a victim into prostitution between January and April 2022—he now faces a mandatory prison term of 15 years up to life with sentencing pending.  FOX61

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents, teachers and community members formed the Fight for Hartford Public Schools Coalition on Tuesday to ask city leaders to stop cutting funding amid a $6.7 million gap — a result of $20 million in cuts to key programs. Mayor Arulampalam said they are working to find more dollars in the budget and are exploring help from private donors and the state as the district searches for a new superintendent.  NBC Connecticut

HEALTH NEWS

  • Connecticut’s 23 tax-exempt hospitals delivered over $3.3 billion in community benefits during 2021 and 2022 and raised that support to $3.5 billion in fiscal 2023, more than double the $1.48 billion they received in tax breaks. The hospitals used funds for unreimbursed Medicaid costs and charity care—efforts that help address local health needs.  CT News Junkie
