CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Harlee Elizabeth Swols, 26, acquitted on grounds of insanity for the 2021 slashing deaths of her grandmother and her boyfriend in Enfield, is appealing her 100-year commitment and has applied for a public defender—her hearing is set for June 3 in Hartford as she argues the commitment law was misapplied. - ➤ Hartford police arrested Joshua Smellie, 34, Friday evening after a May 9 incident at a Main Street church funeral that left one person with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and another with a stab wound — he now faces multiple charges including first-degree assault, criminal possession and use of a firearm, risk of injury, first-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree assault on an elderly person. - ➤ Woodland Regional High School senior Ava Naclerio was selected as one of about 300 nationwide Stamps Scholars after earning a 104.5 QPA—she will attend UConn with a full scholarship covering tuition, room, board and books. Connecticut Post
- ➤ Enfield’s town council has trimmed the school budget increase to about 4% from the board’s proposal of 5.57% after a heated meeting with Superintendent Steven Moccio and board Chairwoman Charlotte Riley—residents have shown strong support for funding education. The council will vote on the budget on Monday and may adjust state funding to help cover costs if a legislative change is made. CT Insider

- ➤ Connecticut farmer Willie Dellacamera took a train to Washington—he attended USDA hearings to push for a $220 million block grant for small farms hit hard by a severe hail storm.
