BUSINESS NEWS

  • Stanley Black & Decker began laying off about 300 workers at its New Britain plant on Monday, and additional terminations may occur by May 18. Company officials said affected workers will receive severance, job placement support and opportunities at other facilities.  WTNH News 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • CT Mirror and ProPublica won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in local reporting for their investigative series On the Hook, which exposed predatory towing practices and led to changes in laws protecting low-income residents in Hartford. The nonprofit newsroom celebrated this milestone in the community.  CT Mirror

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Connecticut have jumped 30 cents in one week to an average of $4.52 per gallon, according to AAA. Experts say the increase is tied to delays in oil shipments from overseas disruptions and urge consumers to check prices carefully as conditions persist.  WFSB-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • With ARPA funds ending in 2026, CT public schools will cut mental health services relied on by nearly 1 in 5 students (over 100,000 affected). Lawmakers introduced House Bill SB19 to boost state funding and help restore essential counseling and psychiatrist services.  CT Mirror
  • A bill that sets new rules for reporting how children are educated passed the Senate Monday night by a 22-14 vote. The law will require every family to file a form while current homeschoolers remain exempt and now heads to Gov. Lamont for his signature.  CT Mirror
  • Dr. Robert Blakes and Dr. MopeninuJesu Oluyinka will begin an anesthesiology residency at Yale School of Medicine and will move to Connecticut at the end of May after a Nigerian wedding ceremony (they received many local recommendations for pizza places, ice cream, and state parks).  Connecticut Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State senators passed a bill today that will regulate homeschooling by requiring background checks for parents and in-person registration, and the measure now heads to Gov. Lamont for review with the law set to take effect in 2027.  WFSB-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts in Hartford marked Melanoma Monday by warning residents about melanoma’s dangers and stressing the need for early detection using the ABCDE rule for spotting warning signs. They advised avoiding sun exposure when the rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  WFSB-TV

  • UConn's junior Jayden Ross averaged 17.4 minutes, 4.6 points and shot 50.4 percent this season — his performance has earned him a prominent role with the team ahead of upcoming games.  Connecticut Post
