COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local young entrepreneurs will sell handmade goods, including spicy pickles and crocheted items, at the NextGen Innovators Market in the West Hartford Town Hall parking lot on Saturday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — with a rain date on Sunday, May 3.  We-Ha
  • Starting next week, Eversource will modernize underground cables in Hartford's west end — a project that may alter local routes during the work. This infrastructure upgrade is set to affect travel and improve service reliability.  FOX61

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The House approved a measure that would require district schools to ban cell phones, and if the Senate passes it by May 6, districts will have until the start of the 2027-2028 school year to implement the ban (using lockable pouches is one option).  WTNH News 8
  • Hartford will receive $30 million in state aid from a $270 million budget boost designed to ease school deficits — city leaders plan to use the funds to cover a $22 million gap this year and secure extra support for next year.  NBC Connecticut

  • Hartford Mayor Arulampalam has announced a plan to convert 20 vacant lots near the north end into affordable homes, with five lots set for groundbreaking this summer pending council approval (aiming to boost local homeownership and safety).  WFSB-TV
  • Lawmakers and local advocates met at the state Capitol on Monday, April 27 to address rising food insecurity among over 500,000 residents as children are affected; officials highlighted that a universal free school breakfast initiative is expected to pass soon in the General Assembly (a move aimed at reducing hunger).  CT News Junkie

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hartford HealthCare has announced a nearly $1 billion investment in Hartford Hospital, including a new 14-story tower with 216 private beds opening in 2031 and a parking garage with 1,700 spots already under construction. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Since November, senior residents at a Highbridge building have been forced to climb stairs because the elevator remains broken; the building shows 16 code violations and $27,000 in fines as management has not responded.
