CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hartford police investigated an armed robbery at a Citgo Gas Station on Thursday night near New Britain Avenue where a firearm was displayed and no arrests were made. WTNH News 8
- ➤ James Blose, a Fairfield bank executive, was sentenced in Hartford federal court on Thursday to four years in prison for stealing about $7.4 million over a decade from banks where he held high positions+ he will also serve three years of supervised release and must report to prison on June 23. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The ACLU of Connecticut filed a lawsuit in New Haven to force the federal government to reinstate the F-1 statuses of four international students whose visa records were terminated without due process. Senior Staff Attorney Elana Bildner said the suit follows similar cases nationwide—where temporary restraining orders have briefly restored status until further court decisions are made. CT Mirror
- ➤ A report from the Office of Child Advocate shows that Hartford and other large cities have child death rates nearly three times higher than their share of the population (Hartford had 9.57% of deaths with 3.31% of the people). The report covers 376 deaths of children under 18 from January 1, 2021 to March 31 and notes that higher numbers of homicides and accidents are linked to these disparities (cities like New Haven, Bridgeport, and Waterbury are also affected). - ➤ Connecticut Attorney General William Tong sent a letter to Avelo Airlines saying it must confirm its safety measures for detainees in shackles—he warned the carrier that its ICE Air contract might cost the airline local tax breaks. Avelo, which recently expanded service at Bradley International Airport, will start deportation flights in May—while lawmakers consider a bill to bar companies that work with federal immigration authorities.
