CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ringing Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus are performing at PeoplesBank Arena from Thursday through Sunday with new acts including a crisscross trapeze performance and an acrobatic bicycle act from China. Tickets are available online.  WFSB-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Enfield High School, students join United Sound’s innovative music class where learners of all abilities master note pitches with a color-coded curriculum. The program, unique in Connecticut, holds biannual concerts that celebrate creativity and inclusion on campus.  FOX61
  • The Connecticut House is voting on a bill today to add safety measures for homeschooling by requiring background checks for parents with child abuse records (prompted by tragic events). The bill is expected to pass and move to the Senate next week.  WFSB-TV
  • The University of Hartford named Kristin Landis-Piwowar as dean of its College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions on Friday, Apr. 24, coming from Oakland University (Rochester, Michigan) to lead more than 1,500 students in nursing, physical therapy, and special education.  University of Hartford
  • Connecticut lawmakers have proposed Senate Bill 8 to create a graduate school loan program funded with up to $10 million in state bonds; the measure aims to ease high tuition costs for healthcare students and protect the future workforce.  CT Mirror
  • More than 45 teachers in New Britain could face layoffs as soon as Thursday and a school might close amid major budget cuts while the state House passed a bill to create Connecticut’s first formal homeschool oversight framework.  WFSB-TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tax season is over but tax relief is still available for those owing money to the IRS - tax attorney Eric Green warns that many companies overpromise deals without a proven method for an accepted Offer in Compromise.  WFSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Connecticut, PURA approved new rate decreases for Eversource and UI customers that cut monthly bills by about $30 and $34 from May 1 to April 30, 2027 (though higher summer use may offset the savings).  FOX61
  • State data shows Connecticut’s SNAP enrollment dropped over 32,500 people (a 9% fall) since July 2025, with overall benefits down by about 65,000 since October 2024. A study warns new eligibility rules may hit New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury and Hartford hardest.  CT Mirror

  • Hartford Hospital’s Community Health Clinic is reaching out to underserved residents by bringing critical health care, food assistance, and resources directly into neighborhoods — building trust through shared community experience.
