Good morning, Hartford. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 25th of April.

CRIME NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fashion industry veteran Nigel Barker will host events at Connecticut Stew Leonard's on May 30 in Newington and May 31 in Danbury and Norwalk—where the Newington store will feature an espresso martini themed fashion show along with tastings, while the other two venues offer meet-and-greets. Local designers, artists and customers can sign up to compete for a prize package that includes an espresso martini machine, barware, coffee and a photo shoot.  Connecticut Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Ned Lamont is promoting a plan to offer free or low-cost preschool for Connecticut families where households earning up to $100,000 pay nothing and those earning up to $150,000 pay only $20 a day—if local schools have available seats. The proposal covers children between three and five and is set to add many subsidized spaces by 2028 while receiving strong support from legislators, parents and business leaders despite funding uncertainties amid federal cutbacks.  CT Mirror

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • According to an American Lung Association report published April 23, Fairfield County had the worst ozone pollution in New England, with worsening smog in New Haven, Hartford, and Waterbury that led to more asthma, lung, and heart problems (with high rates among both children and adults). The report blamed climate change for the poor air quality and urged locals to monitor daily air reports.  CT Mirror
  • A massive wildfire in New Jersey sent smoke into Connecticut yesterday and raised fire risk as dry weather persisted, prompting officials to warn residents that burning permits are not valid near grasslands & woodlands when fire danger is high. Five brush fires were reported including one in Lyme that burned 8 acres and took over three hours to control.  Connecticut Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General William Tong joined East Hartford Mayor Connor Martin and Assistant Police Chief Josh Litwin on April 24 to build support for House Bill 7181—a measure that will boost state enforcement of cannabis, hemp and tobacco laws by raising fines for unlicensed sales and unsafe practices. The bill will let towns keep all civil fines and expand both civil and criminal penalties to protect public safety.  CT News Junkie
  • A recent audit found that the Office of Legislative Management missed some FMLA forms and reported losses too late, prompting recommendations to strengthen internal controls. The department, led by Executive Director Jim Tamburro, said it will review its procedures and document IT controls using the COBIT framework — a move meant to better monitor state resources.  CT News Junkie
