  • Bridge Family Center held its 27th annual Children's Charity Ball on Jan. 31 at Hartford Golf Club in West Hartford, raising about $285,000 for programs that support children and families. Community leaders and sponsors joined in auctions and fundraising challenges to boost vital services.  We-Ha

HEALTH NEWS

  • Connecticut faces a very cold morning as it enters day 10 of its severe weather protocol with single-digit feels-like temperatures, so health officials advise bundling children with extra layers (including hats, scarves and gloves) and driving them to bus stops if possible.  WFSB-TV
  • Fire officials warned residents that sub-zero temperatures have frozen local ponds and lakes, though the ice may be unsafe for use (residents should check its stability before venturing out).  WFSB-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn men remain at No. 2 on the AP Top 25 ballot after they dismantled Creighton Saturday in Omaha (their 17th straight win) as they gear up for Pitino Week games against Xavier and St. John's.  Connecticut Post
  • UConn women extended their 39 game win streak with a 96 to 66 victory over Tennessee on Sunday, Feb. 1 at PeoplesBank Arena (Hartford). The top-ranked team will have its AP poll ranking released today at noon.  Connecticut Post
  • Northwest Catholic beat Conard 54-40 in girls basketball Friday night at Conard’s gym in West Hartford. The win raised their ranking (No. 1 in GametimeCT’s poll and third in CIAC Division I) as both teams prepare for next week’s home games.  We-Ha
  • On Saturday, Jan. 31, Hall High’s boys hockey team defeated New Milford (final score: 7 to 2) at Veterans Memorial Rink after bouncing back from a previous loss. Senior captain Connor McHugh scored a hat trick as the Titans rallied in a fast-paced game.  We-Ha
  • The UConn women’s basketball team entered halftime tied 42-42 with Tennessee — the first time they had not led all season. The game took place at Peoplesbank Arena as early turnovers allowed the scores to balance.  Connecticut Post
