  • CT Nurses United is holding a vigil tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. outside the Capitol to honor ICU nurse Alex Pretti, who was shot and killed by federal Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis last weekend; healthcare workers and elected officials will attend to show support.  CT News Junkie

  • A new documentary video by the Austin Organ Company (founded in 1898) shows how its traditional methods on Woodland Street build organs while training a new generation of craftsmen to update its classic universal air chest system for modern music tastes.   • At Hartford's CT Education Issues Summit (held Wednesday), education leaders said federal actions and funding gaps threaten classrooms, teacher pay and special education. Lawmakers proposed boosting school funds and paying student teachers in the upcoming legislative session.  Connecticut Post

  • Meteorologists say another storm may hit Connecticut this weekend after Winter Storm Benjamin — recent Q&A sessions advise residents to monitor forecast changes closely.  WFSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anyone applying for a learner’s permit in Connecticut must now complete a free online work zone safety course to help drivers navigate construction zones safely. The DMV requirement takes effect immediately.  WFSB-TV
  • Former FTC Chair Lina Khan and Attorney General William Tong discussed hospital mergers and private equity in health care on Thursday, Jan. 29 in Hartford. Lawmakers promised new legislation to give regulators more oversight after local hospitals faced bankruptcy due to heavy debt.  Connecticut Post
  • AARP Connecticut is urging lawmakers to consider a tax credit for family caregivers—who spend over $7,000 yearly to help keep loved ones out of intensive care—in the legislative session starting Feb. 4. The proposal is one of several efforts to ease family costs on prescriptions, healthcare and utilities.  Connecticut Public

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lindsay Stepnowski, the Loomis Chaffee hockey star, helped Team USA win gold in the 18U USA-Canada Series earlier this month by scoring the championship goal, and she will soon join Harvard University to continue her hockey career.   • On Wednesday, Jan. 28 in Storrs, UConn women’s basketball overcame six missing players when junior guard Ashlynn Shade and teammates Kayleigh Heckel and Allie Ziebell delivered record performances.
