- ➤ As dangerously low temperatures prompt emergency measures, officials have 170 warming centers open now and will add shelter spots until Wednesday — Hartford will deploy thermal drones to help reach those sleeping outside. WFSB-TV
- ➤ Veteran Kenneth Korsu of Southbury was inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame on Thursday, Jan. 22 in Rocky Hill, where 14 veterans were honored for their service. He earned two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart in Vietnam and now leads community efforts at VFW Post 1607. Connecticut Post

- ➤ Verizon closed its $20 billion deal to acquire Frontier Communications on Tuesday, Jan. 20, meaning Connecticut customers will use Frontier as a Verizon company for now. Local employees were advised and state regulators will monitor service promises (upgrade plans are expected later). Connecticut Post

- ➤ Six major school projects were added to the state priority list for 2026, pending legislative funding approval. The projects from Milford, Norwich, Seymour, Stamford, Waterbury and Westport include new and renovated schools with a recommended state grant of $141.7 million. Connecticut Post
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Connecticut calling for over a foot of snow plus near whiteout conditions from Sunday morning into Monday evening, so residents should plan for travel delays. Connecticut Post

- ➤ The Connecticut DOT is mobilizing hundreds of trucks and drivers to keep highways clear during Winter Storm Benjamin as temperatures drop to single-digit degrees. Health officials warn that subzero wind chills raise the risk of frostbite and other cold-related ailments. WFSB-TV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Access Health CT will offer a Special Enrollment Period for eligible customers to enroll in health coverage with a state subsidy starting Feb. 1, as Gov. Lamont noted the measure helps working families after federal subsidies ended Dec. 31, 2025 (customers will soon receive further details by mail). CT News Junkie
- ➤ Medical experts advise local seniors that alcohol is processed more slowly as we age (fewer muscles means a higher concentration per drink) and warn that heavy drinking can worsen brain function and increase fall risks, prompting caution with each drink. Connecticut Post
- ➤ Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians launched a new dashboard showing emergency department boarding and wait times across most acute-care hospitals. The 2024 data shows Hartford Hospital had the highest rate (63.1%), and Hartford HealthCare will soon expand capacity with new beds and an urgent care center. Connecticut Post
