ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Five Connecticut legislators (including Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff) signed a letter urging the EPA and Army Corps to keep strong water protections after a proposal to weaken current rules. They warned that rolling back the Waters of the United States rule would risk safe drinking water and force state governments to shoulder extra burdens.  CT News Junkie

  • Hartford HealthCare will take over Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals at 12:01 a.m. today. CEO Jeffrey Flaks promised to upgrade patient safety and care by investing over $300 million, hiring more physicians, and introducing new technology as nearly all legacy staff join the system.  Connecticut Post
  • A federal appeals court ruled that Medicaid funding cuts for Planned Parenthood will remain during legal challenges, and Connecticut officials say the decision risks essential preventive care (Gov. Lamont recently pledged $8.5 million to support affected services).  WTIC
  • On Dec. 20, Connecticut reported 340 flu hospitalizations (an increase of about 100 from the previous week) as doctors warned that the new subclade K variant will drive more severe cases in the coming weeks; officials advise vaccination and good hygiene to reduce severe illness.  Connecticut Post

  • Hunter Dryden, a Taft School goaltender from Fairfield, faces tough comparisons to his legendary grandfather Ken Dryden as he builds his confidence on the ice at Taft School in Watertown while steadily growing his skills.  Connecticut Post
  • UConn, led by Azzi Fudd (18 points) and Sarah Strong (17 points), beat Providence 90-53 on Wednesday, extending its win streak to 30 games. The Huskies have won 52 straight against Big East teams and will host Seton Hall next.  NBC Connecticut
  • The UConn men’s basketball team defeated the Xavier Musketeers 90-67 on Wednesday evening, finishing 2025 on a high note. Alex Karaban (19 points) led the win, and the Huskies will open 2026 with a home game against Marquette Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  WFSB-TV
  • On Wednesday, No. 4 UConn beat Xavier 90-67 behind freshman Braylon Mullins (17 points, five 3s) and Alex Karaban (19 points, seven rebounds, four assists). UConn is now 13-1 overall and 3-0 in Big East play and will host Marquette Sunday.  NBC Connecticut
  • UConn coach Geno Auriemma was two wins from a historic milestone as his team sought to boost his record above 1,099 games over .500 during a Wednesday tip-off in Providence and a Saturday home game in Hartford — the feat would place him among only a few national coaches.  CT Insider
