About this event
America may have just celebrated its 250th, but did you know that Christmas in this country predates the Founding by over a hundred years? Join lecturer Ken Turino for an enchanting journey through the history of the holiday season! In this richly illustrated presentation, he'll explore how Christmas in America evolved from its controversial beginnings in 17th-century New England (when it was banned!) to the cherished holiday we celebrate today. He will reveal how Christmas trees, holiday decorations, and even Santa Claus came to be, while highlighting traditions shaped by Spanish, French, Dutch, and other immigrant cultures. This fascinating talk offers a fresh look at how winter holidays connect us to the complexities of the past—and to one another.
This is a hybrid program; patrons have the option of attending in-person at the library or virtually on Zoom. Registration is required - please sign up using this link .
