🎭 Culture
The Hartt School launched the 17th season of its newly renamed Garmany Concert Series with new artistic director Gilda Lyons and four upcoming concerts at Millard Auditorium.
Verona Quartet will open on October 9, CONCORA will perform on October 23, Duo YUMENO will appear on February 19, and the Dalí Quartet will conclude the series on April 2—each show starting at 7:30 p.m. with tickets at $25 and free entry for University of Hartford affiliates.
The Outlaw Music Festival returns to Hartford today after a break since 2019 with top performers including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Waxahatchee, and Madeline Edwards at the Xfinity Theatre.
Doors open at 3:00 p.m. and performances run until 10:50 p.m., while tickets starting at $54.50 are on sale and free parking is available in the Market-Pequot lot — additional options include an EZ out lot.

A new study by Partnership for Strong Communities showed it would cost about $2.5 billion to expand Connecticut’s Rental Assistance Program—leaving over 175,000 of nearly 240,000 very low-income renter families without aid.
The report revealed that only about 50,000 families received assistance and that state lawmakers recently added $18 million to help address the ongoing housing crisis.
A United Way ALICE report found that 40% of Connecticut households, or 580,520 families, struggled to afford basics in 2023 due to rising inflation and a shortage of affordable housing.
The organization plans to push for a state $600 per child tax credit and more funding for the 211 hotline to help families, while Gov. Ned Lamont favors an enhanced earned income tax credit—sparking debate over how best to support these households.

Gov. Ned Lamont and Commissioner Beth Bye said on Sept.
4th at a West Hartford press conference that Connecticut's new Early Childhood Education Endowment has added more than 500 preschool slots—future plans include 1,000 more spaces next January for communities with high needs.
🏛️ Government
Hartford Fire Department welcomed a new class of firefighters on Friday at the Governor’s Foot Guard in Hartford—community members, city leaders, and families attended the graduation and promotion ceremony.
The new firefighters will be assigned to firehouses across the city.
A Hartford woman was released from ICE custody after nearly two weeks following a workplace raid in Newington on Sept.
5—state officials submitted their bid to keep the Connecticut Sun in the state on the same day.
🏥 Health
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed on July 4 may cause 100K—170K Connecticut residents to lose Medicaid coverage, and nearly 13,000 Hartford residents may be affected over the next decade.
Data shows low-income areas will face the hardest impacts as federal funding is reduced.
🏈 Sports
Sue Bird and Maya Moore — two legendary UConn stars — will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield today.
They become the third and fourth Huskies to gain this honor after Swin Cash and Rebecca Lobo.
