Hartford volunteers held a donation drive outside City Hall today to collect food, clothing, supplies (and flashlights) for earthquake victims in Colombia, where a 7.4 quake left nearly 300 dead and many homeless.
Many donors, including those with family ties to Colombia, joined the effort.
Hundreds gathered Sunday at The Lodge Community Chapel in Windsor to honor former Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman (the state’s first female comptroller) who served eight years; flags flew at half staff and a line of cars marked the tribute before her private burial.
After a Sunday meeting, church leaders at the Center Church House voted to spend about $48,000 for pre-construction costs and tentatively chose contractor Precision Finishes - Superior Finishes to restore the historic meeting house.

Connecticut’s tax-free week is underway until Saturday, Aug.
22, letting shoppers avoid the 6.35% sales tax on clothing, shoes and school supplies. The per-item price cap increased to $300 and non-electronic school supplies are permanently exempt (including pens, pencils and crayons).
