- ➤ Dwight Arnold, the only man still growing Connecticut shade tobacco, harvested the labor-intensive crop on his Massachusetts farm this summer with a team of 50 workers and local high school students—he planted 35 acres for a deal with General Cigar Co. while most local fields shifted to easier-to-grow Broadleaf that now dominate about 3,000 acres in the valley. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hartford police executed a search warrant Monday at 27 Benton Street where officers seized 1.5 kilograms of cocaine, 78 grams of crack cocaine, 12 ounces of marijuana, 240 sleeves of fentanyl, five firearms, and cash totaling about $14,936—investigators charged offenses from narcotics possession to operating a drug factory—and did not release further details on arrests. - ➤ WitchFest returned to Pratt Street for its second year to raise awareness for those wrongly accused and convicted during the 1600s—using history to remind Hartford residents of injustices from the past. FOX61

- ➤ Connecticut officials urged residents to sign up for CT Alert (a free emergency notification system) as tropical storm activity increases, with over 5,000 new subscribers joining and nearly 226,000 people now ready to receive alerts. They advised signing up online or by texting CTALERT to 888-777 to help prepare for an above-normal hurricane season. FOX61
- ➤ The Town of West Hartford — in partnership with PACE and Energize Connecticut — is offering no-cost Home Energy Solutions assessments for homeowners and renters who sign up by Aug. 31 and complete their visit by Oct. 31, replacing the usual $75 co-pay with free energy evaluations and upgrades like air sealing and low-flow fixtures. - ➤ Dana Parrott is a 22 year old power soccer player from Winsted who has lived in a wheelchair since age 9 due to muscular dystrophy and founded nonprofit Made for More to form a Connecticut team. She plans to secure funding and support for athletes with disabilities as she pursues further education and personal goals with the help of her service dog Thoryn — who helps her gain independence.
