ECONOMY NEWS

  • Connecticut’s 26th annual sales tax‑free week begins August 17 and runs through August 23 — most clothing and footwear under $100 will be exempt from the 6.35% tax, and qualifying online purchases will also be tax free.  WTNH News 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Hartford Public Schools hosted its annual back to school rally on August 6 at the East Hartford Green from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.—a ribbon‐cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. marked the renaming of the East Hartford Community Center at 50 Chapman Place where hundreds of students received free backpacks.  WTNH News 8
  • East Hartford Public Schools will host a back-to-school rally while a CT pediatrician urges students to get vaccinations and CT schools have been ranked among the best in the nation by WalletHub. Target announced new school supply prices, and schools are preparing to address teacher shortages and chronic absenteeism+ challenges before the new school term begins.  WTNH News 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut officials are examining adjustments to the state spending cap to counter federal tax cuts and looming Medicaid reductions under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which may affect over 170,000 residents. Gov. Lamont and state lawmakers plan to hold a special session in late September or October to decide if additional state funds will help protect vulnerable groups — a decision that will impact cuts to federal aid and local programs.  CT Mirror
  • Sen. Blumenthal visited Zia S., a former Afghan interpreter detained by ICE on July 16 at an East Hartford courthouse as he seeks his green card, and he called the detention outrageous. Zia’s lawyer says he has done no wrong—Zia will have a hearing in September to fight a deportation order while officials urge support for other interpreters.  NBC Connecticut
  • Connecticut AI experts backed a federal bill to regulate tech companies after a briefing with Sen. Richard Blumenthal outside the state Capitol in Hartford on May 16, 2023 — the bipartisan measure co-sponsored by Blumenthal and Sen. Josh Hawley aims to enforce penalties against companies that misuse personal data and copyrighted materials. Leaders said the bill would help ensure fair competition in the industry.  CT Mirror
