ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Kayleigh Roy of West Hartford fought off a black bear on June 29 while hiking in Simsbury—her 10-year-old pit bull mix Phoenix was injured and later treated at a local emergency veterinary hospital.  CT Insider

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 11, the state Supreme Court unanimously upheld James Maharg’s conviction for the 2019 murder of his husband in Sherman and condemned the 13-hour interrogation during his alcohol withdrawal, stating that the officers failed to follow proper policy & jeopardized his health and the trial's fairness.  Connecticut Post
  • South Windsor police arrested 44-year-old Hartford resident Eliu Claudio on Thursday on firearm and reckless driving charges—his high-speed chase ended when he crashed into the police department’s fence.  WFSB-TV
  • A 15-year-old from East Hartford and a 14-year-old from Syracuse have been extradited to Florida to face felony charges for swatting calls made during an online Fortnite game—calls that falsely reported gunshots and a family shooting on June 4 and 5 and sent police to a home on Pilchard Drive.  Connecticut Post

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Wilton resident won a $10.8 million Connecticut Lottery jackpot in January and took about two months to claim the prize as a $7.8 million lump sum. Financial experts advise winners to work with a tax professional, an attorney, and a financial planner to plan the use of large winnings.  Connecticut Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut food pantries secured $9 million in state funding after years of lobbying, with $3 million for this fiscal year and $6 million next—this is five times more than past budgets but may fall short as federal SNAP cuts take effect. Local groups already serving high numbers report that rising demand could further challenge their resources.  Connecticut Public
  • An audit found state prosecutors did not explain why nearly half of domestic violence charges were dismissed between 2021 and 2023—failing to meet statutory reporting rules, and a key advisory council lacked the power to approve community treatment programs. The Division of Criminal Justice said it will update its record-keeping and train its staff to address these issues while facing staffing shortages and ending funding support.  Connecticut Post

  • Hartford Lions Soccer Academy will host its first free girls’ soccer clinic from July 19 to Aug. 16 at Global Communication Academy Field from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The nonprofit will teach soccer skills and CPR with Hartford HealthCare as partner — families are urged to register early to secure a headcount.  NBC Connecticut
  • Connecticut players are expected to be selected in the MLB draft that begins tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Atlanta—local talents like Wolcott's Cam Maldonado and UConn's Ryan Daniels are among those being watched over the two-day process.  Connecticut Post
