  • Habitat for Humanity of North Central Connecticut is enlisting hundreds of volunteers to join Women Build on its house project at Mahl Avenue in Hartford—a month-long initiative empowering women with construction skills. Dedication is planned in December.  FOX61

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Hartford Public Schools announced three elementary school teacher finalists for Teacher of the Year Tuesday at a Board of Education meeting (Hixon from Morley, Ploof from Duffy, Woods from Aiken), with the winner set to be named on May 20.  We-Ha
  • Connecticut lawmakers closed the session with a $190M boost in education funding and an extra $152M in school grants amid debates on phones and homeschooling. The measures may help support local schools moving forward.  FOX61
  • Hartford special education teacher Antonela Qyra was named 2026 Teacher of the Year by Specialized Education Services, Inc. (SESI) at High Road School on Wednesday; she leads a campus-wide literacy program that boosted reading fluency for 80% of her students.  WTNH News 8
  • Hundreds of young men from across Connecticut gathered (about 800 attendees) at Southern Connecticut State University for the third annual GEM Conference celebrating 100 achievers and offering mentorship in varied careers.   • Connecticut legislature approved a bill naming basketball star Sue Bird as a state bird for March, sharing the title with the American robin starting next year & Gov. Ned Lamont is expected to sign the law.  NBC Connecticut
  • The CT Senate passed a bill that extends solar incentives until 2035 + imposes a one-year moratorium on large solar array projects in East Windsor and Enfield, and paves the way for plug-in solar panels; the legislation now heads to Gov. Lamont for signature.  Connecticut Public

  • On April 30, more than 130 community members gathered at Bushnell Park for the fourth annual 2-4-1 ASICS Blue Jean Mile, a fun run supporting free sports-based programs that help Hartford kids build confidence (TOP Self).
