ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out around 9 p.m. in an apartment on the fifth floor of a building on Prospect Avenue—leaving one person dead and 26 residents displaced.  WFSB-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Richard Barrington pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault for hitting and killing Police Det. Bobby Garten when he fled a traffic stop in September 2023—he is scheduled for a pre-sentencing investigation on June 20.  WTNH News 8
  • Yesterday's broadcast from Nicole Nalepa, Tracey McCain, Jill Gilardi, and Caitlin Francis gave a forecast of isolated rain and snow showers and updated viewers on local incidents. The segment reported a fire near Prospect Avenue that killed one person and forced 26 residents out, a fire at a Hartford senior living facility that left one dead, a home fire in Watertown under investigation, and a double shooting near Winter Street in New Haven that left one dead — all on April 8.  WFSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam announced a new program that will transform vacant lots into affordable homes to boost homeownership for Black and Brown residents. The pilot, based on the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act—funded by $2 million from the state and $2 million from Hartford—will see a task force set up in coming weeks to identify redevelopment sites.  Connecticut Public
  • Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz held a roundtable in Hartford Tuesday, April 8 to discuss proposals to expand free pre-K access for families making up to $100,000 a year + raise early childhood educator salaries. Lawmakers will consider what could be the largest pre-K expansion in state history + additional steps to support early learning.  WTNH News 8
