CULTURE NEWS

  • Hartford Mayor Arulampalam and Director Duggan announced a long weekend festival this July to celebrate America 250. The city will honor the milestone with local events for the community to enjoy.  NBC Connecticut
  • Popstar Kesha will perform at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m. on her seventh headlining tour, The Freedom Tour. Tickets go on sale Friday, Mar. 27 at 10 a.m.  NBC Connecticut

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Hartford will hold its 2026 commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 17 at PeoplesBank Arena downtown. Kathleen Behrens ’85 (NBA official) will address undergraduates in the afternoon and Sabrina Trocchi, CEO of Wheeler Health, will speak to graduates in the morning.  University of Hartford

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Hartford Public Works will begin bi-weekly spring yard waste collection the week of April 13 with curbside pickup that matches recycling days, while Saturday hours resume April 11 at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center for residents. The service will run through the end of October.  We-Ha
  • Christina Ghio was endorsed as the state child advocate by the House on Wednesday with a vote of 97–42 that exposed divisions over a home-schooling oversight bill, and her record of holding DCF accountable comes amid complaints that her testimony focused more on home schooling than on DCF reform.  CT Mirror

HEALTH NEWS

  • State officials ordered all residents at Bickford Health Care Center to be transferred after DPH cited 12 safety violations, including a 93-year-old wandering outdoors and dying from cold exposure. The ombudsman and DSS said new placements will be set by April 10, ensuring care+support for residents.  CT Mirror
  • Allergy season is already underway in Hartford as pollen counts hit medium levels on March 9, and Pam Sherman of UConn Health said tree and grass pollen will increase by mid-April—she suggests showering after long outdoor exposure and washing pets to reduce symptoms.  NBC Connecticut

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn men's team is set to fly to Washington, D.C. for a Sweet 16 matchup while the women's team will leave for Texas to face North Carolina. Both teams celebrated a send-off recently as they prepare for the NCAA tournament.  WFSB-TV
  • On Wednesday, Mar. 23, UConn sophomore Sarah Strong was named the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and leads the team as they prepare to face North Carolina in the Sweet 16 on Friday.  NBC Connecticut
