Enjoy a rousing concert by Giacomo Gates, Jazz Vocal Instructor, who has been teaching at Wesleyan University since 1999. In the 2024 DownBeat magazine Critics Poll, Gates was ranked as one of the top "Male Jazz Vocalists." Gates will be accompanied by Tomoko Ohno on piano and Phil Bowler on acoustic bass. Giacomo Gates has 10 heavily-acclaimed albums, international releases all charting in the top 15, with two #1 recordings, for six and four weeks, on national jazz radio. Playing major United States jazz clubs, festivals, and countless universities and jazz societies, Gates' enormous appeal and popularity are obvious from his many repeat engagements. He's performed and taught in Europe, Russia, Canada, and Australia. Gates does more than sing "a bunch of songs." He is truly an entertainer for all ages and styles, as audiences enjoy the music, the interaction with the musicians, the spontaneity, the humor\\ , and the stories about the music and composers, along with anecdotes concerning the repertoire. Gates' life experience is unlike any other jazz artist that may come to mind. After a number of years driving everything from school buses, to cattle transporters, to 18-wheelers, Gates depar ted to the Alaskan wilderness for 14 years to work as an operating engineer in a variety of construction jobs, including three years on the Alaska pipeline. Gates found these experiences to be powerful stimulation for developing his own artistic expression.
