In More Than a Game , Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, with journalist Dom Amore, reflects on a career that transcended the basketball court and shaped countless lives. From humble beginnings in Braintree, Massachusetts, to building the UConn men’s basketball dynasty, Calhoun shares the inspiring stories of players, coaches, and colleagues who embodied his philosophy: relationships and perseverance are the keys to greatness. Through the highs of national championships and the quiet moments of mentorship, this book reveals the essence of Calhoun’s legacy: a commitment to being there for others.
This heartfelt and candid memoir goes beyond the stats and trophies to showcase a life devoted to building a culture of family and care. Featuring tales of iconic players like Ray Allen, Kemba Walker, and Rip Hamilton, as well as unsung heroes who found success off the court, More Than a Game celebrates the power of belief, community, and resilience.
Jim A. Calhoun is a Hall of Fame former college basketball coach. He was head coach of the University of Connecticut (UConn) men’s basketball team from 1986 to 2012, during which time his teams won three NCAA national championships (1999, 2004, 2011), played in four Final Fours, won the 1988 NIT title, and won seventeen Big East Championships. Calhoun is one of only six coaches in NCAA Division I history to win three or more championships, and he is widely considered one of the greatest coaches of all time.
Dom Amore is a Connecticut-based sports columnist and reporter for the Hartford Courant with over 40 years of experience covering New York and Connecticut sports, including UConn men’s and women’s basketball, the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, high school sports, and local teams like Hartford Athletic. Amore has been named Connecticut Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) several times, and is also an Adjunct Professor of Journalism at Southern Connecticut State University. In addition to More Than a Game , he is the author of Franchise on the Rise: The First Twenty Years of the New York Yankees , published in 2018.
