About this event
This gala concert will mark the UConn Collegium Musicum’s 101st semester as a course at UConn. Joined by alumni, faculty, and professional players, the student ensemble will present five Magnificats from the fifteenth through the twenty-first centuries, including J.S. Bach’s famous setting.
Founded in 1976 by the late Professor Bruce Bellingham and currently directed by Dr. Eric Rice, the UConn Collegium Musicum fosters an understanding of the music of the past. It performs well-known works from the standard repertoire using the instruments and performance techniques of the time, known as “historically informed performance” or HIP; and it performs music that has been neglected, often for hundreds of years. In the case of HIP, musicians and audiences are invited to reconsider works by famous composers; in the case of neglected repertoire, they are introduced to music that has been forgotten or ignored, sometimes due to the composer’s gender, religion, or race.
